27 Days to go - River Based

I managed to get the airbrush and compressor out today so i have undercoated and basecoated the river

this is how it started
the river was formed with newspaper and PVA ala papermache

i first gave the whole river a rough brown undercoat
followed by a camo green one
I then went over the whole river with a weak black wash, to get all the areas the spray didn't get

now just got to apply the water effect which i think i will colour with a hint of blue, which i'm hoping will give a river type effect.

27 Days to go - Church Painting (well kinda)

this is a first coat on the church, going for a white wash effect on the timber and slate type roofing

27 Days to go - little updates

havn't had much time over the last few days to do much so heres couple of little updates

some specifics are posted above but this is the current look of the board

36 Days to go - Balsa Arrived

whooo hooo balsa arrived today, meaning i can get on with building bridges fences and cladding the buildings.

unfortunately some items are on back order, so i'm going to run down to hobby craft and purchase some EXPENSIVE balsa until the other stuff turns up

41 Days to go

Having given up trying to find styrofoam this morning i went and collected an 8 x 4 sheet of celotex so that i can start building the board.

Board laid out ready to start, give me strength :$

I started by stripping off the silver foil, which was easier said then done, once taken off the board warped ever so slightly

you really need to strip all the foil off other wise it really warps, with all foil off its fine.

Foil being peeled off

I then marked up the 6" squares to aid transfering the layout i put together

Added the river for reference, after marking it out i cut the board down the the middle of the river to help cut it out

Before cutting out the river i cut and marked up the level 1 hill that also has the the river / waterfall

Cut out the river, tried to use a hot wire cutter but as celotex is fire retardant this wasn't happening

started apply no more nails to stick the foam to the board

this shows the whole of the back hill with levels one, two and three in place

made up the graveyead/front hill, both to levels 1 and 2, the left hand side is going to be a rockfall of types directly in to the river.

Mock up on the board so far

WIP Church - pt1

so made a start on the church for my Malifaux board, it measures around 15.5 x 10 x 18 (at the heighest point)

the plan is to clad the building in balsa, also on the side i will add shut balsa windows of a similar style to the front.

i'm aslo considering building a raised base for the chuch out of balsa, with stairs and a bannister at the front.

Mock up

Ok so i thought i'd mock up the design before i started building it, good thing i did, 1 thing is for sure the saloon is almost certainly out. it simply doesn't fit.

general veiw

layout doesn't look so bad from here

Overhead

but from here you can clearly see the saloon which should be opposit the 2 black buildings, won't fit.

if you look at the previous post i had 4 building along the right hand side, it appears to only fit 3, so i think i might put in another small building and a hanging platform instead.

p.s. the smaller black buildings are outhouses but i ran out of buildings to mock up with :)

Transportation

ok so had a thought, how in the earth am i going to transport this thing, without causing huge problems.

my first though was to have it in 2 halves, that fit into a shell so you can sling it over your shoulder (it is for demos after all), problem is if you look at the proposed layout, quite alot of scenery elements cross the half way line, no matter which way you orientate it.

hmmm, dilemma in the making

Materials - Styrofoam

Ok so after searching hi and low for styrofoam in the UK only to find the supplier will sell me 24 sheets minimum, I've settled on using this , it appears to be about the right stuff so we'll see

going to pick up a 2400x1200 sheet tonight. wish me luck

1st Draft

this was the first draft, some issues were the bridge was going from level 2 (or 1) to 0 which would of been an issue, but apart from that its a pretty simple layout

2nd Draft with some colour

this is the same image but with some colour applied so that you can see the areas a little (very little) more clearly

2nd Draft

This is my general idea of the board layout

its got a lot for a 3 x 3 board, river, roads/paths, couple of buildings, water pump, mine shaft, hills and a grave yard.

Malifaux Demo Board

ok, so the plan is to build a Mailfaux Demo Board in time for salute 2010, which is about 45days away and being as its taking me 10 months to semi paint my Rasputina boxset i bought last year at salute its going to be tight.

the board will be a 3' x 3' board constructed of MDF and Styrofoam

more details to follow

1st Post

opened my first blog not sure why, but here we go
